ALBERTA BASIC SECURITY TRAINING (ABST)

Alberta Basic Security Training is a 40 hour course mandated by the Solicitor General of Alberta.  This course must be complete prior to working in the security industry.  Upon successful completion of ABST, you will apply to the Solicitor General for a Security Licence.


ABST covers the basics of the security industry, including relevant laws from the Criminal Code of Canada as well as the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Pressure Point Control Tactics- Defensive Tactics  (PPCT-DT)

Defensive Tactics is a 40 hour course designed for officer safety and successful apprehension of a suspect.  This course was developed for the law enforcement community, and is a hands on, situation based training program.  Defensive Tactics covers everything from how the body responds to a crisis, to suspect behaviors and response options, to handcuffing, self-defense, baton and weapons retention.  Upon completion of this course, you will receive a certificate from First Contact as well as one from Human Factor Research Group TPR valid for one year.  Along with this you will become a trained member of the law enforcement community with a backing from a large international organization.  Re-certification courses will be offered, which are shorter in duration.


In order to enroll in this course, you must have a security licence, be a peace or police officer, or a member of the Canadian Armed Forces.

CANADIAN FIREARMS SAFETY COURSE

​The CFSC is the only curriculum authorized by the Canadian Firearms Program which is a program within the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.  One of pre-requisites to obtain the Possession and Acquisition Licence is to have successfully completed the CFSC. Whether you are interested in becoming an armored guard or simply would like to engage in shooting sports such as target shooting or hunting, this program will provide the necessary basic skills you require. The course is comprised of two classes.

NON-RESTRICTED FIREARMS PAL COURSE

Designed to include most long-barrel sporting shot guns and rifles. The material covered includes firearm history, ammunition, safe handling, storage and more. The Non-Restricted Course is government mandated at 8 hours of classroom instruction plus written and practical exams. The Non-Restricted Course must be successfully completed prior to taking the Restricted Course. SITUATIONAL AWARENESS/SELF-DEFENSE

First Contact has designed a self-defense program based on Law Enforcement Training and Tactics from real world application and experience.  The idea of self-defense is simply defense of ones self.  With our self-defense program you will learn techniques derived from the law enforcement community, that have been tested in the legal world.  If a peace officer can use these techniques for their self-defense, then so can you.  First Contact offers a one day or two day course in.  Please contact us for information, or if you are a group that would like a course tailored to your environment, we can assist you.  Don't feel unsafe in your world!

Course Cost: 8 Hour- $40.00+GST 16 Hour- $75.00+GST 





HANDCUFFING

Handcuffing has been broken down into two days and available as two separate courses.  Basic Handcuffing is a one day, 8 hour course that covers the relevant laws that apply to arresting and detaining a subject as well as proper application of handcuffs on a COMPLIANT subject.  


Tactical Handcuffing is the full 2 day course, 16 hours, which includes day one Basic Handcuffing.  On day 2 participants will conduct a full review of day one, and then move into Handcuffing a resistive subject, take-downs during handcuffing, searching and escort tactics.  Participants will also engage in situation based training designed to test their ability and new tactical knowledge.


Upon completion of handcuffing, participants will receive a certificate from First Contact in either Basic or Tactical Handcuffing valid for 1 year.  Recertification on Tactical Handcuffing will require participating in day 2 of a course in the future, to brush up on skills, assist new officers, and once again test your ability and knowledge.


There is no entry pre-requisites for this course.

​Standard First Aid with CPR C and AED (Two Day course)

A two day course that will include all of the skills listed in Emergency First Aid, in addition to first aid for other injuries and illnesses including fractures of the upper and lower limbs. This course covers a Level C CPR training and certification (Adult, Child, Infant, and 2-rescuer resuscitation) and AED training and certification. This course will cover two full days and is evaluated with a physical skills component as well as theory component via multiple choice written exam. Physical skills are mandatory, if you cannot successfully demonstrate the skills on the days of the program you will not be successful in this course.

Course Cost: 16 Hour- $145.00+GST


 Standard First Aid with HCP CPR (Two Day course)

A program geared directly toward Health Care Providers/Professionals and covers all skills from the Standard First Aid in Emergency First Aid, but includes Health Care Provider CPR skills and additional cardiac and respiratory knowledge and skill. This course will cover two full days and is evaluated with a physical skills component as well as theory component via multiple choice written exam. Physical skills are mandatory, if you cannot successfully demonstrate the skills on the days of the program you will not be successful in this course.


HCP (Health Care Provider) CPR with AED (One Day course)

This course is designed for students already involved in, or looking to become involved in the Health Care industry. It is a pre-requisite for many Health Care Programs, and is required to be renewed annually in some industries. This program includes HCP level CPR plus additional skills in Artificial Respiration and use of a BVM (Bag Valve Mask). This course will cover one full day and is evaluated with a physical skills component as well as theory component via multiple choice written exam. Physical skills are mandatory, if you cannot successfully demonstrate the skills on the day of the program you will not be successful in this course.


Medical First Responder (MFR) Program (40 hour course)

This program is designed for First Response settings and has recently been approved for Volunteer Fire Departments participating in the new provincial MFR protocols. It is designed to enhance responders understanding of conditions, situations, and needs for more involved emergencies in which they may be caring for a casualty or patient for a longer period of time or during more difficult rescues. This course includes training to an HCP level of CPR, Oxygen Administration,  covers application of cervical collars for spinal motion restriction (backboards) protocols, more involved evaluation of vital signs, further information on respiratory emergencies, extrication situations, and better prep for First Response situations of many kinds. This program is recommended for anyone currently volunteering with a fire department, currently applying for or working for law enforcement agencies, handling sports teams as a designated First Aid response, or perhaps just wanting to enhance your personal knowledge and skills for an active lifestyle or future EMS endeavors.


This course is a 40hr (class time) that can be provided over the course of 5 full days, or broken into two weekends to include Friday evening, Saturday/Sunday full days. There is required pre-study that must be done prior to attending the first schedule day of the program. Please contact us for more details or questions on this program. This program is very hands on with lots of floor work and practical skills evaluation. If you are not capable of demonstrating (with ease) the skills for the prr-requisite program you WILL NOT be successful in this program. 


Pre-requisite: Standard First Aid Level C CPR with AED current within one year of the first scheduled day.

Recommended: Standard First Aid with HCP CPR current within 6 months of the first scheduled day.
